The simple construction and reliability of Y Strainers have led to their widespread use in engineering systems and industries for mechanical filtration of flow from solid inclusions.
Mechanical filters consist of a body and a filtering element. The filter body is usually made in a Y-shape from bronze, brass, cast iron, or steel, with flanged or threaded connections to the pipeline. The filtering element is made of perforated sheet or stainless steel mesh rigidly fixed to the cover of the sludge collection chamber.
Bronze and brass filters are used with a nominal passage diameter of up to DN50 inclusive. Brass pipeline fittings are characterized by low cost and high reliability. One of the disadvantages of brass filters is the leaching of zinc from brass, which involves selective corrosion, where zinc is removed from the brass while copper remains. Manufacturers of high-quality brass filters have solved this issue by using brass resistant to zinc leaching.
Y Strainers made of cast iron and stainless steel are typically used for pipeline diameters from DN40, although they are also produced in smaller sizes. Cast iron filters are known for their low cost, while stainless steel filters offer high resistance to aggressive environments.
