Principle of operation of a bypass valve is based on the counteraction of the working medium and the spring-loaded actuator (spring) on the valve disc. On one hand, the pressure of the water acts on the valve disc, tending to open the valve, and on the other hand, the force of the compressed spring tends to close the valve. As long as the force created by the compressed spring exceeds the pressure of the water, the valve remains closed, but as soon as the pressure of the water exceeds the force of the spring, the balance is disturbed and the valve starts to open.

The degree of opening of the bypass valve is directly proportional to the pressure imbalance on its valve disc. It should be noted that the setting pressure corresponds to the beginning of the valve opening, and full opening is achieved only at a pressure 1.2-2.0 times greater than the setting pressure. The pressure created by the spring on the valve disc is the setting pressure of the bypass valve.

Low pressure maintenance accuracy is the main disadvantage of bypass valves.
