The principle of operation of a ball valve is based on blocking the flow by rotating the ball-shaped shut-off element around an axis perpendicular to the flow direction. The shut-off element has a hole with an inner diameter equal to the diameter of the pipeline. In the open position, the axis of the hole in the valve coincides with the axis of the pipeline, and in the closed position, they are perpendicular. To fully open or close the valve, it is sufficient to rotate the ball by 90 degrees.

A tight seal is provided by the close fit of the polished surface of the ball to the polymer end rings. In ball valves with a floating ball, additional sealing is provided by pressing the shut-off element against the end ring under the pressure of the working medium. Practically all threaded ball valves are made with a floating ball.

Handles are used for manual control of the ball valve, and if necessary, a rotary electric drive can be installed on the ball valve for remote or automatic control.

During operation, the shut-off of the ball valve must be in one of the extreme positions - fully open or fully closed. It is not allowed to operate a ball valve with a partially open shut-off, as abrasive wear of the ball will lead to a loss of sealing of the flow.
