The main structural difference of gate valves from other types of shut-off valves is the translational (up/down) movement of the gate along the guides provided in the body, in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the pipeline.

Principle of operation of a gate valve with an extending stem. In a flat gate, a threaded stem is fixed, which forms a working pair with a corresponding nut fixed on the handwheel. The handwheel is attached to the gate valve body in such a way that it can rotate around its axis and the stem axis.

Rotation of the handwheel through the nut fixed in it, by means of the thread, is converted into translational movement of the stem and, accordingly, the gate. In the fully closed position, the gate completely blocks the flow, and in the fully open position, it moves to a chamber located beyond the periphery of the flow, while the stem rises above the handwheel.

Principle of operation of a gate valve with a non-extending stem. The threaded stem is rigidly fixed on the handwheel, and the corresponding nut is fixed in the gate valve body. Rotation of the handwheel and the stem through the threaded nut is converted into translational movement of the gate. In the fully closed position, the gate completely blocks the flow, and in the fully open position, it moves to a chamber located beyond the periphery of the flow, while the stem moves inside the gate.

The tightness of the flow shut-off is ensured by a metal/metal type seal, and in the case of using rubber gates - rubber/metal.

Handwheels are used to control gate valves with small diameter (up to DN150), while for larger gate valves, gear drives are used. If remote control is required, the gate valve can be equipped with an electric drive.
