Butterfly valve is a shut-off pipeline valve. The shut-off element is designed in the form of a disc that rotates on an axis perpendicular to the flow axis. The valve is closed when the disc plane is perpendicular to the pipeline axis and open when the plane aligns with the axis.
Working media
Butterfly valves are used to shut off the flow of water, steam, compressed air, and petroleum products over a wide range of operating temperatures and pressures. All valves you find in our catalog can be used to shut off the flow of water; for use with other media, check with the suppliers.
Application scope
Butterfly valves are widely used in pipelines with a nominal diameter exceeding DN50, in heating systems, water supply, boiler rooms, heat exchangers, and pump stations where compact size, maintainability, and low cost are important.
Advantages
- Low cost.
- Simple and reliable design.
- Quick opening capability.
- Technically simple repair.
- Quick replacement capability.
- No maintenance required.
- Can be installed in any position.
- The working medium can flow in any direction.
- Low metal consumption and, as a result, light weight.
- Simple operation; to open, the handle needs to be turned 90°.
- High corrosion resistance, the valve body does not come into contact with the working medium as it is protected by a polymer liner (sleeve).
- Smallest dimensions along the pipeline axis compared to other types of shut-off valves.
- In wafer installation, no additional sealing gaskets are required. Sealing is achieved by compressing the liner ends between the valve body and the connecting flanges.
Disadvantages
- Non-full bore design, the disc is always in the center of the flow.
- Requires high torque, and as a result, long handles and gearbox drives for manual control, and expensive electric drives with high torque for automatic control.
- Long handles complicate installation in confined spaces, such as heat chambers and wells.
- Abrasive wear of sealing liners often leads to premature leakage.
- Sudden opening can cause a water hammer, which is unacceptable for some systems.
- Tightness class A is achieved only with soft seal discs; butterfly valves with metal-to-metal sealing have a tightness class B or lower.
